What the heck is SEO (search engine optimization)? It's quite simply making your content or your business most relevant to a search term that people would use looking for you, or whatever you sell, or whatever you offer, and hopefully in the area you offer.

That is the definition of search engine optimization. I've optimized my content and my website to be relevant to the terms that I've identified as keywords that I believe will bring me business. And then you stop and you say, gosh, that sounds like a lot of bumbo jumbo. I don't get it. Well, you probably do. You just don't understand how it applies to you.

Let's say right now you were on Google and you said you were looking for, you know, a Mexican restaurant near me. And Google, as long as the Mexican restaurants in your area near you have actually gone through and said, hey, I want to be found when somebody says Mexican restaurant near me for the radius of five miles around my location, then they become optimized for that search term.

But they also should be optimized for:

  • the word Mexican restaurant
  • Mexican restaurant in the city
  • burrito grande

You know, all these different terms that are in any way relatable to something that you do, you offer, that you think people want, these become what are known as key terms.

8 BILLION SEARCHES HAPPEN A DAY. WHY ISN'T SOMEONE FINDING YOU?

It's location, location, location.

Keyword research and planning for relevant local content

These keywords are what the terms people are punching into Google looking for you. We've noticed over the years and years that we've been doing this, people fail to look first and then, you know, plan for content and then release the content. Is the content interesting? Is it relatable to the term I want people to find me by? And that becomes a challenge for many people.

The sequence matters: research → plan → write → release. Most people skip step one and wonder why nothing works.

Your content must match how real people actually search — not just how you talk about your business.

Then comes the next problem: How do I release the content correctly? How do I make sure it actually gets picked up by Google — and not penalized?

Here's where most people screw up:

  • They copy content from another site
  • Change a few words
  • Hit publish
  • And think they're good

But Google knows. It's already seen that content somewhere else. And if you're not the original source, Google assumes you copied it.

Keyword Discovery: How to Find What Your Customers Are Typing into Google

So what do we do? Whenever we have a business come through, first thing we do is we try to go get some sort of inkling. What are all the different terms that people may be using that's relatable to you and your business? In most cases, we'll find a bunch of terms. Then we'll find a bunch of competitors that are also doing what you're doing. And they also may have some other ideas about some other terms that we can bring back to the client. Is this relatable to you?

  • We start with keyword discovery based on your business
  • We research your competitors to uncover additional search terms
  • We bring the list back to you and ask, "Is this relatable to you?"

Then the work is easy from there. We're just going to create content that is 100% engaging, interesting, and relatable to the term that we want to be found by. Then we're selling reporting systems so we can see where are we in Google when somebody searches that term. Anybody in front of you? Well, they're probably your competitors. They're probably talking about the same topics. They probably have generated more content than you because they, in Google's eyes, are more relative to the search term and that's why they're further up.

  • If they're ranking higher, they've written more — simple as that
  • Google sees them as more relevant because they're putting out more content
  • Your goal is to be in the top three positions in Google organically for any of these terms

Understanding BSEO versus real search engine optimization

One thing you want to do is cut past the noise. There is a big proponent of what's called SEO that most people buy, and it's called BSEO. And BSEO is just basically you know you're supposed to have SEO, and so you buy it. Someone says, oh, yeah, I'll sell it to you. And then nothing happens. And they say, oh, wait another month. Oh, wait another month. Keep paying another month. And these are typically places you need to stay away from. Why do I say that? It's simple.

There's only three types of SEO that you can apply to your website:

  • On-page SEO
  • Off-page SEO
  • Technical SEO

Technical should be the first thing done. Is your website running properly? Are there anything in it that's going to slow down Google from reading this or slow down from being able to decipher the code from the content? It sounds technical. That's why it's called technical SEO. But basically you're tuning up your website so that Google can read it and find what I'm transmitting to them, my content with these keywords, or why you want to index me.

  • If your site loads slow, has broken code, or can't be crawled — Google isn't going to rank it
  • Technical SEO is the groundwork. If it's wrong, nothing else works

So then next is off-page SEO. And I just want to say I'm always kind of amazed that I will talk to, you know, literally hundreds of people over the years that said, yes, I'm paying for SEO. I've been doing it for two years, but nothing seems to be happening. And I'd say 80% of the time we find out no one's actually written any new content for their website.

On-page content is how Google knows you're worth ranking

If you understand SEO, you get that it's about relevance. You release content, and Google says: "This page answers the question. Let's show it."

But here's the kicker: A lot of business owners are paying for "SEO" month after month… and no new content ever gets published.

Why? Because you're not buying SEO — you're buying the idea of SEO. There's no SEO happening. Just BS.

Your content should talk about your business:

  • Why are you great at what you do?
  • Why should someone choose you instead of the next guy?
  • Can you back it up with real examples?

Create SEO Content That Converts Local Searches Into Leads

And lastly, just know that SEO is all based on words. And the irony is people don't read anymore. Luckily, you have Google. Google reads and does everything off of words. So when they get, you know, if they can find you, what you want to do next is know that you finally got one of these lazy people to punch something in and they come to your website and then you say all these great things but it's in words.

Most people can't sit through a thousand words:

  • Attention spans are gone
  • No one reads full pages
  • But Google still does, and that's the key

But yet you must engage them. I must get them to talk to me because I am the expert. And this is where you have to realize the other form of this is engagement.

  • If they won't read, you've got to meet them another way
  • Video is the answer. Short, visual, digestible.

Track SEO Performance, See Real Results, and Build Long-Term Visibility

The irony is that they put the share bars on social media, so they're sharing from social media back out. So they put that on you. Now they have all the content. They have you as a content contributor. You don't have visitors, but you're driving people to Instagram. You might also notice when you do that, once you get to Instagram, there's no links that you can place to bring them back to your website. So one has to ask, why would you do it?

SEO is the only real way to do something correctly for you and for your website as far as content posting.

  • Social media gets the traffic, not you
  • You can't even link back from Instagram, it's a one-way funnel
  • Stop giving content away to platforms that don't convert

Anyway, and then just saying, we install two reporting systems, so you can always see exactly how much traffic you're getting, where they're coming from, how long are they here, and that way you can evaluate what is the next piece of content you want to release.

Because the longer you can engage people, the more likely you're going to get them to have a phone call with somebody, a conversation, and then hopefully turn them into a customer. There's lots of other little tricks that aren't really tricks. There's lots of little techniques that people just don't do that make all the difference in the world.

For over 20 years, we've been helping all kinds of businesses in every kind of scenario. That business you're in, Google works the same way for any company for any term. You should call us, talk to us, and we give you the first half an hour free. Because if it doesn't make sense to you, you shouldn't engage or buy anything.
