Seasonal SEO: When to Start Ranking for Next Season's Searches
Ask a Santa Barbara business when its busy season starts and you will hear a month. Summer. The holidays. Wedding season. Ask when its customers start searching and you usually get a blank look. We are an SEO company in Santa Barbara, and that gap between the two is where most seasonal businesses lose the year.
The visitor who walks down State Street in July probably picked where to eat, stay or book months before they packed the car.
People search long before they show up
Here is the shape of a typical summer business, drawn as a year. The exact months move from business to business. The order never does.
An example summer business. Shift the rows to fit yours: a wedding venue's searching row starts a year or more out, a holiday shop's starts in the fall.
Read it from the bottom up. Busy from June. Searched for from spring. Which means the pages had to exist, and had to be found, before spring. The red row is the one most businesses get wrong, because it happens in the quietest part of their year.
Why you cannot start when it gets busy
A page published in June for a June search is a page Google has barely met. It has not been crawled much, it has no history, and nothing points to it yet. Google is open about the fact that changes take time to show.
In general, you likely want to wait a few weeks to assess whether your work had beneficial effects in Google Search results.Google Search Central, SEO Starter Guide
A few weeks just to see whether something worked, and longer for a page to settle into a strong position. We went through what decides that in how long SEO takes to work. For a seasonal business the lesson is simple: the work has to land in the slow months, or it lands too late.
A plan you can run every year
Counting back from your busy months, this is the order that works.
- Off-seasonWrite the pages for next seasonThe menu, the packages, the event page, the "things to do near us" page. Publish them while you have time to think, not the week you open.
- Before people searchRefresh last year's pagesNew dates, new photos, this year's prices if you publish them. A page that still says last season looks closed to a stranger.
- As searching startsMake sure the right page shows upSearch the way a visitor would, from their phone, with the words they would use. Fix anything that lands on the wrong page or nowhere.
- During the seasonCollect the proofAsk for reviews while customers are standing in front of you. Take the photos. They are next year's content.
- After the seasonKeep the pages aliveDo not delete the summer page in September. Update it. A page that comes back every year keeps the history it earned.
That last step matters more than it sounds. Pulling pages down after the rush throws away everything they built up, and you start from nothing next spring. Stopping between seasons has the same slow cost we described in what happens if you stop doing SEO.
The map pack follows the same calendar
The three businesses on the map get chosen by people already in town, but the reviews and photos that put them there pile up in the busy months and go quiet in the slow ones. A profile that looks stale in March is up against one that looks alive. Keeping that profile current all year is its own job, and it is the one our local SEO work in Santa Barbara covers.
