How Long Does SEO Take to Work?

How Long Does SEO Take to Work?

The Final Code
The short version

Some of it moves in weeks. The part you actually care about, the phone ringing from people who did not already know your name, usually lands somewhere between month four and month twelve.

That is the honest answer. The useful part is that you can tell inside thirty days whether it is working, and you do not have to take anybody's word for it.

Nobody likes this question, on either side of the table. You want a date. We would love to give you one. But anyone who hands you a date is either new at this or counting on you not remembering the conversation.

So here is what actually happens, in order, with what you should be able to see at each stage. We do this work as an SEO company in Ventura, California, and this is the same timeline we walk clients through before they spend a dollar.

First, the uncomfortable data

Ahrefs studied a million pages to see how fast new pages reach the top ten. The numbers are worth sitting with for a second.

1.74% Of new pages Reach the top ten within a year at all.
72.9% Of the top ten Are pages more than three years old.
5 years The average number one That is the age of the page beating you.

You can read the full Ahrefs study here. Read it as the weather, not as a verdict. Those figures cover every page on the internet, including the millions nobody maintains and the ones about topics with a thousand competitors. A service page for a specific trade in a specific county is a far smaller fight than that.

The point is not that it is hopeless. The point is that anyone promising you page one by Friday is selling something.

What moves, and when

Weeks one to four

The map, the profile, and whatever is broken

Month 1 of 12

This is the fastest part, and it surprises people. Your Google Business Profile can move in days: the right categories, the services listed properly, real photos, the hours correct, the service area drawn where you actually go. If your profile has been sitting half filled out, this alone can change what happens in the map. That work sits in local SEO and the map pack, and it is a different job from ranking a page.

The other thing that happens now is unglamorous: somebody finds the pages that are broken, slow, duplicated or missing, and fixes them.

What you should seeA list of what changed, with dates. Not a report about strategy.
Months two to three

Pages land and start getting found

Month 3 of 12

New pages go up for the things you actually sell, in the towns you actually serve. They get indexed in days. They start ranking for the long, specific searches first, the ones with five or six words in them, because almost nobody has written a page aimed at exactly that.

Those searches do not have huge volume. They convert like nothing else, because somebody typing a six word search knows exactly what they want.

What you should seeImpressions climbing in Google Search Console, and your first calls off searches you have never ranked for before.
Months four to six

It starts compounding

Month 6 of 12

This is where the work you paid for in month one starts earning. Pages that went up in month two have a track record now. They link to each other. Reviews have accumulated. Google has watched your site behave consistently for half a year.

The shorter, more valuable searches start to move. Not all of them, and not instantly, but the line stops being flat.

What you should seeThe phone changing in a way you notice without opening a dashboard.
Months six to twelve

The searches you actually wanted

Month 12 of 12

The two and three word searches, the ones with real money behind them, are the last to move, because those are the ones every competitor is also trying to win. This is where the three year old page from that Ahrefs study is sitting, and passing it takes time rather than cleverness.

It is also where the compounding gets genuinely fun. A month of work done in February is still paying in November, which is the opposite of how ads behave.

What you should seeYour name turning up for the terms you named at the start, and work arriving from towns you were invisible in.

How to know at 30, 90 and 180 days

You should never have to wonder. Three checkpoints, and you can run all of them yourself.

30 Days

Is anything different on the site? Count the pages that changed and the ones that are new. If nothing on your website is different after a month, nothing is happening.

90 Days

Open Google Search Console. Are you appearing for searches you did not appear for in month one? That is the leading signal, and it shows up well before the calls do.

180 Days

Calls and quote requests, tracked back to what caused them. By now this should be a number you can point at, not a feeling.

If you want to know what the work looks like while it is happening rather than in a monthly summary, our hours are logged in the open. That is not us being noble. It is us not wanting an argument in month four about what got done.

Find out where you stand today

Send us your website. We will tell you which searches you are already close on, which ones are a year of work, and which ones are not worth chasing. Free, and yours to keep whether or not you ever hire us.

What it looks like when it works

Two of ours, because numbers with a name on them are worth more than numbers without one.

Primary Pool Services came to us servicing forty pools, with twelve Google visits a month. Fifteen months later they were over two hundred pools with a fleet of vans. Fifteen months. Not fifteen weeks, and there was a stretch in the middle where the interesting part was still ahead of them.

Superlok USA turned up for 294 search terms, most of them its own name, which is the search equivalent of only your mother calling. They now appear for more than ten thousand, and the business is up roughly fifty percent.

Neither of those happened in a quarter. Both of them are still happening.

Why the promises are always short

Because a real timeline is a hard thing to sell. "Page one in ninety days" closes deals that "somewhere between month four and month twelve" does not, and the person saying it often plans to be paid for six of those months before you start asking questions.

When you get a date, ask what happens if it is missed. The answer tells you whether it was a forecast or a sales line. There are nine more questions worth asking in the ten questions to ask before you hire an SEO company, and that one is number seven.

If you are in Ventura County

We are at 1300 Eastman Ave in Ventura, California. Come by, or send the website over and we will read it before you decide anything.

No contracts, and never have been. If the work is not earning by the checkpoints above, you stop, and you keep everything.

Start the clock

The sooner the first pages go up, the sooner month twelve arrives. Tell us the town and what you want the phone to do, and we will show you where you sit today and what it takes to move.
