What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), and Is It Just SEO With a New Name?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your business named, quoted and linked when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google’s AI Overviews a question, instead of only ranking in the list of links underneath. It is also the newest line on a lot of marketing proposals, right under SEO, usually with its own monthly price and no explanation of what is different.
When a new acronym shows up on the invoice and nobody can tell you what it does, that is BSEO: you not knowing what you bought. So let’s take this one apart, using what the companies that run the answer engines say themselves.
One question, two kinds of answer
A search engine hands you a list and lets you pick. An answer engine reads the list for you and writes back a few sentences, with a handful of sources attached. Ask both the same question and the difference looks like this:
A search engine
A list. You are one link in it, and the buyer does the picking.
An answer engine
One answer. You are named in it, or you are not.
A drawing, not real results. The companies are made up.
That is the whole idea of AEO. The prize stops being a spot on page one and becomes a mention in a few sentences. And an answer has no page two.
What changes from SEO, and what doesn't
This is the part the acronym sellers tend to skip. Google, which runs the biggest answer engine of all, says this about its AI Overviews and AI Mode:
“There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”
“The best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Google Search (such as AI Overviews and AI Mode).”
Google Search Central, “AI features and your website,” updated December 10, 2025So on Google, AEO is SEO. The work that gets you into the links is the work that gets you into the answer. A few things really are different, though:
- The prize is smaller and sharper. A list of ten still sends some clicks to number four. An answer that names three businesses sends nothing to the fourth.
- Other engines read your site with their own crawlers. ChatGPT search and Perplexity send their own bots. OpenAI’s guide says “we recommend allowing OAI-SearchBot in your site’s robots.txt file,” and Perplexity says the same about PerplexityBot. Block them, even by accident, and those engines have nothing of yours to quote.
- The writing gets quoted, not just ranked. Answer engines lift whole sentences. A page that answers the question in its first line is easy to quote. A page that warms up for three paragraphs is not. We went through the seven places SEO and AI search actually split apart if you want the long version.
How can I improve my brand's visibility in answer engines?
Five things, cheapest first:
- Let the engines in.Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or a blanket block on everything. It takes five minutes and it is the cheapest fix on this page.
- Answer the real questions, first sentence first. The questions customers ask you on the phone, each answered plainly on your own site, with the answer at the top and the details after it.
- Say the same thing everywhere.Your name, what you do, where you work and how to reach you should match on your website, your Google Business Profile and every directory listing. When they disagree, an engine has to guess.
- Get talked about somewhere else.Reviews, local news, trade associations, supplier pages. Answer engines read what other sites say about you, not just what you say about yourself.
- Ask the engines what they say about you.Put your buyers' questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, write down who they name, and ask again next month. We showed how in tracking brand mentions in AI search.
AEO on the invoice: what you should be able to see
If you pay for AEO, the work leaves tracks, the same way real SEO does. You should be able to see four things:
- The questions.Written down: the actual questions the work is aimed at, in the words your buyers use.
- The pages that answer them.By address, new or rewritten, with the date each one went live.
- The crawler check.Proof that Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot can all read your site.
- The answers, before and after. The same questions asked of the same engines, saved, so you can see whether you went from missing to mentioned.
If what comes back instead is “our AEO method is proprietary,” you have met the newest version of an old problem. It is the same test we gave SEO bills in do you know what you bought?, with one more acronym on the line. And if you would rather hand the work to an AEO agency, hold it to those four things from the first month.
