Why Does Google Trust Some Businesses More? E-E-A-T, in Plain Words

Why Does Google Trust Some Businesses More? E-E-A-T, in Plain Words

The Final Code

Picture two contractors in Montecito. Same trade, same prices, same good work. One comes up when somebody searches for what they do, and the other one is nowhere. As an SEO company in Santa Barbara, we can tell you the reason is usually not the work. It is that Google believes one of them and not the other.

That belief has a name. Google calls it E-E-A-T, and once you understand it, a lot of “why is that guy ranking and not me” starts to make sense.

Four letters, and one of them matters most

Google’s own guide to helpful content spells out what its systems look for. They try to spot content that shows

experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness, or what we call E-E-A-T. Of these aspects, trust is most important. Google Search Central, Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content

Read that last sentence again. The first three letters are how you earn the fourth one.

EExperienceYou have actually done the thing. Real jobs, real places, real results.
EExpertiseYou know the subject deeply enough to explain it, not just sell it.
AAuthorityOther people point to you. Customers, local press, the trade, your town.
TTrustThe one that counts. Everything above it is how a stranger, or Google, decides to believe you.

It is not a score, and you cannot buy it

Here is where a lot of people get sold something. There is no E-E-A-T meter inside Google that somebody can crank up for a monthly fee. Google says so in plain words.

While E-E-A-T itself isn't a specific ranking factor, using a mix of factors that can identify content with good E-E-A-T is useful. Google Search Central, Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content

So it is not one switch. It is a pile of small signals that add up to one message: this business is real, and it knows what it is doing. Google even has people, called search quality raters, who check whether its results are any good, including whether the content shows strong E-E-A-T. You cannot fake your way past a pile of signals. You can only build it.

When a competitor with a worse business keeps beating you anyway, this is very often part of why. We walked through the other reasons in why your competitor outranks you.

Saying it is not the same as showing it

Most business websites say some version of the same few things. Google has seen them everywhere, and none of them prove anything. The fix is not to say them louder. It is to replace each claim with the evidence behind it.

  • What most sites sayWhat actually earns trust
  • Quality service you can trustYour license number, right there, so anybody can look it up.
  • Years of experienceThe owner's name and face, and the year the business started.
  • Serving the whole areaPhotos of real jobs in Carpinteria, Hope Ranch and Goleta, with what you did at each one.
  • Experts in our fieldA straight answer to the question customers ask before they hire you, written by the person who does the work.
  • Satisfaction guaranteedReviews from real customers about real jobs, and your replies to them.

Two lines from Google’s guide sum up the whole table. The first is about who is behind the page.

Something that helps people intuitively understand the E-E-A-T of content is when it's clear who created it. Google Search Central, Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content

The second is a question Google suggests you ask about every page you publish.

Does your content clearly demonstrate first-hand expertise and a depth of knowledge (for example, expertise that comes from having actually used a product or service, or visiting a place)? Google Search Central, Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content

That is the whole game for a local business. You have done the work. You have stood in the kitchens and on the roofs and in the yards. Most websites just never show it.

The AI answers run on the same trust

More and more people never see the list of links. They ask ChatGPT or read the AI answer at the top of Google, and a few business names come back. Those tools face the same question Google does: which of these businesses can I believe enough to recommend?

The business that shows its name, its work and its proof is the easy one to name. The one with a template site and five slogans is not. We went deeper on that in how to show up in AI search, and it is the heart of our AI visibility work.

We will tell you whether Google believes you.

Trust is not a trick. It is the work you already do, finally put where a stranger can see it. Showing it, page after page, is what SEO done properly actually is.
