Long-Tail Keywords: Why "Kitchen Remodel Montecito" Beats "Contractor"

Long-Tail Keywords: Why "Kitchen Remodel Montecito" Beats "Contractor"

The Final Code

Ask most owners what they want to rank for and you get one word. Contractor. Dentist. Restaurant. It feels like the prize, because it is the biggest. We are an SEO company in Santa Barbara, and we would talk you out of that word and into the longer searches underneath it.

Those longer searches have a name, long-tail keywords, and they are where a local business actually wins.

Watch one search get closer to a sale

Here is the same need, typed four different ways. Each extra word tells you more about the person typing it.

  1. contractorCould be anyone, anywhere, wanting anything. A student, a contractor looking for work, somebody in another state.
  2. kitchen remodelNow we know the job. They might still be dreaming, browsing pictures for a project that is years off.
  3. kitchen remodel santa barbaraNow we know the place. This person wants someone local, which narrows the field to the businesses that can actually show up.
  4. kitchen remodel contractor montecito free estimateThis person has decided. They know the job, the town and the next step. They are picking who to call today.

The first search is the one everybody wants. The last one is the one that pays. It is also the one almost nobody bothered to write a page for.

Short searches are crowded and vague

The short word is a fight with national brands, directories and every business in the county at once. Even if you won it, a lot of the people searching it were never going to hire you.

"Contractor"
  • Huge competition, including national sites
  • People at the very start, or not buying at all
  • No idea what job they want or where
  • A long, slow fight to win
"Kitchen remodel Montecito"
  • A handful of real competitors
  • People who already know what they want
  • The job and the town are spelled out
  • Winnable by a business your size

Fewer people type the long version. But nearly all of them are the people you want, and there are a lot of long versions. Add them up across every job and every town you serve and they usually outweigh the one big word.

Write for the words people actually use

The catch is that customers do not always use your words. A contractor says “cabinetry”. The homeowner types “new kitchen cabinets”. Google’s own advice starts there.

Think about the words that a user might search for to find a piece of your content. Google Search Central, SEO Starter Guide

The same guide points out that some people search for “charcuterie” and others for “cheese board”. Same thing, different words. Your page needs the words your customers use, not just the ones your trade uses. We went deeper on what people mean by what they type in our post on how customers actually search.

How to go after them without writing junk

This is where a lot of sites go wrong. They make a hundred near-identical pages, one per town and one per wording, each saying the same thing with a different name swapped in. Google sees through that, and so do customers.

The better way is simpler:

Give each real job its own page. Kitchen remodels and bathroom remodels are different jobs with different questions. They deserve different pages. That is the whole idea behind one page for every job.

Answer the questions that come with the job. Cost, timing, permits, what happens first. Every real question a customer asks is another long search that page can answer.

Mention the places you genuinely serve, where it is natural. A remodel finished in Montecito, a project in Goleta, a kitchen in Carpinteria. Real work in real towns reads like a business, not a keyword list.

Use your customers’ words. Listen to how people describe the job on the phone. Those exact phrases are long-tail keywords, handed to you for free.

We will show you the searches you could be winning.
