Why Do People See You on Google but Never Click?

Why Do People See You on Google but Never Click?

The Final Code

Somebody on State Street types what you sell into their phone. Your business comes up. They read it, keep scrolling, and tap the one underneath. You never find out, because a look that turns into nothing leaves no trace on your end. We are an SEO company in Santa Barbara, and this is one of the most fixable problems we see.

Getting onto the page is the hard part. Losing the tap once you are there is usually down to two lines of text that nobody has looked at in years.

Two results, one tap

Here is the same kind of business, twice. Same town, same service, same spot on the page. Read them the way a stranger would, in about two seconds each.

It says nothing about what you do or where. The description gets cut off before it reaches anything useful.

Tapped yoursite.com Kitchen Remodeling in Santa Barbara and Montecito Custom kitchens designed and built in Santa Barbara, Goleta and Montecito. See finished projects and book a free in-home consultation.

It names the job and the place in the first words, then tells you exactly what happens if you tap.

Nobody chose the second one because it was clever. They chose it because it answered the question they had just typed. That is the whole trick.

Google mostly shows what you wrote

Those two lines are not random. The blue line is usually the title of your page, and the grey text under it is often your page description, a short summary written into the page for exactly this purpose. Google is plain about what it wants from both.

Write descriptive and concise text for your <title> elements. Google Search Central, Influencing your title links in search results

Google sometimes rewrites them when it thinks it can do better, which tells you something. If yours are being swapped out, they probably were not saying much. And on a lot of small business sites they were never written at all, so every page wears the same “Home | Welcome” label that came with the template.

If the wrong page is the one turning up in the first place, that is a different fix, and we went through it in Google showing the wrong page.

The four things a tapped result has

  1. 1The job, in the first wordsKitchen remodeling, emergency plumbing, wedding photography. The words the person typed, as close to the start as you can get them.
  2. 2The place, when place mattersSanta Barbara, Goleta, Carpinteria. Someone searching for a service near them looks for their own town before anything else.
  3. 3One reason to pick youA free estimate, weekend hours, how long you have been doing this. Something true that the listing underneath you does not say.
  4. 4What happens when they tapSee the menu, check availability, book a consultation. People tap when they know where they are going to land.

Notice what is missing from that list: your company slogan, a list of every service you offer, and the word “welcome”. None of it helps a stranger decide in two seconds.

The map listings above the results run on a different set of signals, which is its own job and the one our local SEO work in Santa Barbara handles. This post is about the plain blue links underneath.

How to tell this is your problem

You can check this yourself for free in Google Search Console, which shows how many times your pages appeared in results and how many times someone actually clicked. A page that appears constantly and almost never gets clicked is the one with the weak two lines.

That is a different problem from not showing up at all. If you are not sure which one you have, start with where you actually rank, because rewriting titles on a page nobody sees does not help.

One warning while you are in there. Do not cram the same keyword in four times. Google calls that out directly, and it makes the listing read like spam to the person you are trying to win.

The cheapest fix in SEO

Rewriting a title and a description takes minutes per page. There is no new design, no new content and no waiting on a developer for most sites. It is the closest thing to free you will find in this work, and it pays on the traffic you already have.

Start with the five pages that matter most to you: your homepage, your main service pages and your contact page. Read each listing as a stranger standing on State Street with a phone. If you would not tap it, neither will they.

Being found and being chosen are two separate jobs. Plenty of businesses win the first and quietly lose the second every day. Fixing the two lines is ordinary search work, and it is usually the fastest improvement anyone can make.
