How Do You Rank When You're the New Business in Town?
SEO Year one Narrow beats broad
You opened this year. Maybe this quarter. Your competitors have been online since before anybody had an iPhone, and every article you read says the same thing: build authority over time. Which is beautiful advice if you have a time machine and useless if you opened in March. We do SEO for companies in Santa Barbara, and new businesses ask us this in the first ten minutes, usually while apologizing for asking.
So let us be straight about the part that is real, and then about the part nobody tells you, which is better news than you are expecting.
The part that is real
You are behind, and not for a reason you can outwork this month.
Eleven years of people linking to them, writing about them, reviewing them and arguing with them. You cannot buy that and you cannot rush it.
Anybody who tells you otherwise is about to sell you something that gets you in trouble. We will come back to that.
The part nobody tells you
You are not supposed to fight them yet.
Everyone new makes the same move. They pick the biggest, most obvious phrase in their industry, the one with their whole business in it, and they aim the entire website at it. Then they lose to a company with eleven years of history, which was always going to happen, and they conclude that SEO does not work.
That phrase is not your first fight. It is your third or fourth, and you get there by winning the small ones nobody bothered to claim.
An eleven year old website is not eleven years better than you at everything. It is eleven years better at the one obvious thing. On the specific, awkward, exactly-what-somebody-actually-typed questions, it is frequently no better than you at all, because nobody there ever wrote the answer down.
What you already own on day one
This is the inventory nobody takes, and it is worth more than the head start you do not have.
Check the list before you spend anything
- No legacy mess. No eleven years of abandoned pages, dead plugins, three versions of the same service and a blog that stopped in 2019. Your site can be exactly what it should be, which is a genuine advantage and the only one that expires if you wait.
- You can be specific. An established company has to talk to everybody. You can pick the narrowest, most particular version of what you do and own it completely, because you are not protecting anything.
- You actually know the answers. You are in the work every day right now. The questions customers ask you this week are the exact ones nobody in your industry has written a decent page about.
- You have real relationships already. Suppliers, the chamber, the people who trained you, the first few customers who like you. Every one of those is a mention you can go ask for, and almost nobody asks.
- You can be fast. No committee, no brand guidelines, no agency of record. You can publish something useful on Tuesday. They cannot.
The order that works
-
Pick the fight you can win
Not the big term. The specific one: the exact service, the exact problem, the exact thing somebody types when they already know what they need. Fewer people search it, and the ones who do are closer to buying than anybody typing the broad phrase.
Week one -
Write the page that answers it properly
Not a services page with a paragraph. The actual answer, the way you would explain it standing in front of somebody, including the parts your competitors leave out because they are inconvenient. This is the single highest paying hour in your first year.
Week one to three -
Go collect the mentions you have already earned
Suppliers with dealer pages. The trade association. The chamber. The person who trained you. The charity you sponsored. These are not favors, they are listings that already exist and are missing your name. Ask for all of them in one afternoon.
Month one -
Then do it again, four more times
Four more specific questions, four more pages that actually answer them. Now you are the site with five real pages on the subject against their one, and that is a fight you are winning rather than a fight you are losing.
Months two to six -
Now go after the big one
By this point you have traffic, pages, mentions and a site Google has seen behave like a real business for months. The obvious phrase is still hard. It is no longer impossible, which it genuinely was in month one.
Month six and on
If you want the honest calendar underneath that sequence, month by month, we wrote it out in how long SEO takes to work. And if you are tempted to launch with a page for every town nearby, read can you rank in more than one city first, because that particular shortcut has a name and Google publishes it.
What will get you buried
Three offers you will get in your first year
- Buying links. Somebody will offer you a hundred backlinks for a few hundred dollars. Google defines link spam as creating links "primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings" and names "exchanging money for links" as an example. A new site with a sudden pile of paid links looks exactly like what it is.
- A page for every town within fifty miles. Same page, different town name. Also named in the same policy, as doorway abuse.
- Guaranteed first place by a date. Nobody controls the results, so nobody can guarantee a position in them. What somebody can honestly promise is the work, the hours and the checkpoints.
The frustrating thing about all three is that they work for a while, which is exactly why they keep being sold. Then they stop working, and undoing them costs more than doing it properly would have.
What this looks like when it goes right
An industrial fittings manufacturer came to us appearing for 294 search terms. Not a new company, but in search terms it was starting from roughly nowhere, and the method was this one: specific questions first, real pages, then breadth. The Superlok story has the numbers. It is the same approach behind our local SEO work and the SEO program around it.
If you are new in Santa Barbara
One thing specific to this market. A lot of the money here is decided by somebody who is not here yet, sitting in Los Angeles or the Bay Area planning a trip, a wedding or a move. They have no idea who the established names are, which means they are not loyal to anybody, which means the eleven year head start matters considerably less to them than it does to a local.
That is your opening, and it closes as soon as somebody else writes the page first.
Send us the website, even if it is a week old, and tell us what you do. We will come back with the specific searches you could realistically win this year, who currently owns them, and what the first three pages should be. Free, no contract, and yours either way.
