What Is SEO Consulting?
SEO consulting is expert advice on how to get your business found on Google. A consultant studies your website, your competitors and what your customers search for, then gives you a clear plan.
An SEO agency carries that plan out. Think of it as a puzzle: consulting is the picture on the box, and the agency work puts the pieces in place. You need both.
At The Final Code, we do both. We plan like consultants and do the work like an agency, whether that is SEO services for your whole website, local SEO for your Google Maps listing, or SEO for manufacturers with thousands of part numbers. Having both halves together is how a pool service company grew 400% in 15 months.
What SEO consulting includes
Consulting is where every good SEO project starts. A solid plan usually covers five things:
- A technical checkupWhat is broken or slow on your site, and what Google has trouble reading.
- A keyword planThe searches your customers type, and what it takes to show up in AI answers like ChatGPT too.
- A content planWhich pages to write or improve, and in what order.
- A competitor checkWhy the business above you on Google is above you.
- A priority listWhat to do first, what to do next, and what to stop doing right now.
That is real value. Nobody on your team studies Google all day. Your team runs payroll, answers the phone, and once spent four hours trying to change your business hours on Google Maps.
The missing piece: somebody to do the work
Say the plan has forty-one suggestions. Suggestion nine: combine your three similar service pages into one.
Great advice. When several pages say nearly the same thing, Google has to choose which one to show. Google's own guidance is to pick your preferred page and tell Google which one it is.
Now, who does it? Your office manager, who is on hold with the insurance company? Your nephew, who is "good with computers" and last changed your website font to something he called cleaner?
Pick the mix that fits your business
Because we do both, you do not have to choose one half and hope for the best. Here is how it usually fits together:
You have a marketer and a web developer
Your team can do the work. You need a clear plan and somebody to check in and keep it on track.
ConsultingYou have nobody free to do it
You need the plan and the hands. We handle both, from writing pages to fixing what is slowing your site down.
Done for youYou have one helpful person with no spare time
They take the quick wins. We take the rest, so nothing gets dropped when a busy season hits.
A mix of bothWe will check how your business shows up on Google today and tell you what to fix first. Free.
The one question to ask anyone you hire
Consultant, agency, growth partner: anybody can use any of these titles. We once met a "Chief Visibility Architect." He was twenty-three and reselling somebody else's software.
So skip the title and ask this:
"At the end of month one, what will be different on my website?"
Google publishes its own list of questions to ask before hiring SEO help, and it is worth four minutes. Ask to see examples of past work. Ask what experience they have in your industry. And know that, in Google's words, "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google."
Three free checks you can do today
- See how much of your site Google knows about
site:yourdomain.comType this into Google with your own web address and no space after the colon. The number of results is roughly how many of your pages Google has stored. If it is far lower than the pages you have, you just found something worth fixing in eleven seconds.
- Open Google Search ConsoleIt is free, from Google. It shows how many people found each of your pages, and lists any pages Google left out and why.
- Read your service pages out loudIdeally to another person. If you get bored of your own business halfway through, your customers probably did too. Better writing fixes that.
Do these three and you will walk into any SEO conversation knowing exactly what to ask.
Putting the whole puzzle together
SEO works best when the people who make the plan are also the people who carry it out. That is how we work. We check your site, plan and prioritize like consultants, then write the pages, make the fixes and log every hour so you can see where it went.
And if your team wants to take some of the work on, great. We will hand over the pieces you want and keep the rest. No contracts, either. If we are not good enough, you can leave.
Quick answers
What is the difference between an SEO consultant and an SEO agency?
A consultant tells you what to change. An agency makes the changes. Some firms, including The Final Code, do both, so the plan and the work come from the same team.
Do I need SEO help for a brand new website?
It is the best time to get it. Google itself says a great time to hire SEO help is before a redesign or a new site launch. Setting things up right from the start costs far less than fixing them later.
What should a good SEO plan include?
Specific changes, each tied to a specific page, each with a reason, sorted by how much it matters. If it includes a page called "Our Methodology" with a diagram of overlapping circles, you can skip that page.
